History Nugget:

Group A:  The Old Altamont Road originated as part of the Lincoln Highway named after President Abraham Lincoln.  In 1913 the Lincoln Highway Association was created and the transcontinental roadway project was completed in 1915.  The Lincoln Highway started in Times Square in New York and ended at Lincoln Park in San Francisco.  The Lincoln Highway was also referred to as Altamont Pass Road which in addition to the roadway had two railroad rights of way.  The Altamont Pass Road was bypassed in c. 1937 with a roadway higher on the summit, today’s HWY580.

Group B We will ride to Livermore’s Sycamore Grove via Holdner Park and then head north to Collier Canyon.  From there we will ride east and eventually get to Greenville Rd.  Then it is on to the finish.

The pace will be leisurely with frequent regroups.  You can reverse the route to shorten the distance at any point.

History Nugget:

Group B:  Near ride mile 9.5 27 kidnap victims were buried alive in a truck in the gravel quarry.   The Chowchilla Kidnapping of 1976, as it is known, was carried out by three young men. They abducted a school bus driver and his 26 young passengers.  Under gunpoint the 27 victims were ordered into a truck that was buried in the quarry.  Ransom was sought from the parents.

The bus driver and one of the oldest children were able to open a hatch in the roof of the truck and dug out an escape route.  After 16 hrs underground all 27 escaped to safety.  The three kidnappers were sentenced to life in prison.  A movie was made about the abduction in 1993.
